Daily Bible Reading from BibleStudyTools.com
July 3, 2012 - New American Standard
28 One of the scribes came and heard them arguing, and recognizing that He had answered them well, asked Him, "What commandment is the foremost of all ?" 29 Jesus answered, "The foremost is, 'HEAR, O ISRAEL ! THE LORD OUR GOD IS ONE LORD ; 30 AND YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND, AND WITH ALL YOUR STRENGTH.' 31 "The second is this, 'YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.' There is no other commandment greater than these." 32 The scribe said to Him, "Right, Teacher ; You have truly stated that HE IS ONE, AND THERE IS NO ONE ELSE BESIDES HIM; 33 AND TO LOVE HIM WITH ALL THE HEART AND WITH ALL THE UNDERSTANDING AND WITH ALL THE STRENGTH, AND TO LOVE ONE'S NEIGHBOR AS HIMSELF, is much more than all burnt offerings and sacrifices." 34 When Jesus saw that he had answered intelligently, He said to him, "You are not far from the kingdom of God." After that, no one would venture to ask Him any more questions. 35 And Jesus began to say, as He taught in the temple, "How is it that the scribes say that the Christ is the son of David ? 36 "David himself said in the Holy Spirit, 'THE LORD SAID TO MY LORD, "SIT AT MY RIGHT HAND, UNTIL I PUT YOUR ENEMIES BENEATH YOUR FEET."' 37 "David himself calls Him 'Lord '; so in what sense is He his son ?" And the large crowd enjoyed listening to Him. 38 In His teaching He was saying : "Beware of the scribes who like to walk around in long robes, and like respectful greetings in the market places, 39 and chief seats in the synagogues and places of honor at banquets, 40 who devour widows' houses, and for appearance's sake offer long prayers ; these will receive greater condemnation."
The Widow's Mite
41 And He sat down opposite the treasury, and began observing how the people were putting money into the treasury ; and many rich people were putting in large sums. 42 A poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, which amount to a cent. 43 Calling His disciples to Him, He said to them, "Truly I say to you, this poor widow put in more than all the contributors to the treasury ; 44 for they all put in out of their surplus, but she, out of her poverty, put in all she owned, all she had to live on."
Solomon's Officials
1 Now King Solomon was king over all Israel. 2 These were his officials : Azariah the son of Zadok was the priest ; 3 Elihoreph and Ahijah, the sons of Shisha were secretaries ; Jehoshaphat the son of Ahilud was the recorder ; 4 and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was over the army ; and Zadok and Abiathar were priests ; 5 and Azariah the son of Nathan was over the deputies ; and Zabud the son of Nathan, a priest, was the king's friend ; 6 and Ahishar was over the household ; and Adoniram the son of Abda was over the men subject to forced labor. 7 Solomon had twelve deputies over all Israel, who provided for the king and his household ; each man had to provide for a month in the year. 8 These are their names : Ben-hur, in the hill country of Ephraim ; 9 Ben-deker in Makaz and Shaalbim and Beth-shemesh and Elonbeth-hanan ; 10 Ben-hesed, in Arubboth (Socoh was his and all the land of Hepher ); 11 Ben-abinadab, in all the height of Dor (Taphath the daughter of Solomon was his wife ); 12 Baana the son of Ahilud, in Taanach and Megiddo, and all Beth-shean which is beside Zarethan below Jezreel, from Beth-shean to Abel-meholah as far as the other side of Jokmeam ; 13 Ben-geber, in Ramoth-gilead (the towns of Jair, the son of Manasseh, which are in Gilead were his: the region of Argob, which is in Bashan, sixty great cities with walls and bronze bars were his); 14 Ahinadab the son of Iddo, in Mahanaim ; 15 Ahimaaz, in Naphtali (he also married Basemath the daughter of Solomon ); 16 Baana the son of Hushai, in Asher and Bealoth ; 17 Jehoshaphat the son of Paruah, in Issachar ; 18 Shimei the son of Ela, in Benjamin ; 19 Geber the son of Uri, in the land of Gilead, the country of Sihon king of the Amorites and of Og king of Bashan ; and he was the only deputy who was in the land.
Solomon's Power, Wealth and Wisdom
20 Judah and Israel were as numerous as the sand that is on the seashore in abundance ; they were eating and drinking and rejoicing. 21 Now Solomon ruled over all the kingdoms from the River to the land of the Philistines and to the border of Egypt ; they brought tribute and served Solomon all the days of his life. 22 Solomon's provision for one day was thirty kors of fine flour and sixty kors of meal, 23 ten fat oxen, twenty pasture-fed oxen, a hundred sheep besides deer, gazelles, roebucks, and fattened fowl. 24 For he had dominion over everything west of the River, from Tiphsah even to Gaza, over all the kings west of the River ; and he had peace on all sides around about him. 25 So Judah and Israel lived in safety, every man under his vine and his fig tree, from Dan even to Beersheba, all the days of Solomon. 26 Solomon had 40,000 stalls of horses for his chariots, and 12,000 horsemen. 27 Those deputies provided for King Solomon and all who came to King Solomon's table, each in his month ; they left nothing lacking. 28 They also brought barley and straw for the horses and swift steeds to the place where it should be, each according to his charge. 29 Now God gave Solomon wisdom and very great discernment and breadth of mind, like the sand that is on the seashore . 30 Solomon's wisdom surpassed the wisdom of all the sons of the east and all the wisdom of Egypt. 31 For he was wiser than all men, than Ethan the Ezrahite, Heman, Calcol and Darda, the sons of Mahol ; and his fame was known in all the surrounding nations. 32 He also spoke 3,000 proverbs, and his songs were 1,005 . 33 He spoke of trees, from the cedar that is in Lebanon even to the hyssop that grows on the wall ; he spoke also of animals and birds and creeping things and fish. 34 Men came from all peoples to hear the wisdom of Solomon, from all the kings of the earth who had heard of his wisdom.
Alliance with King Hiram
1 Now Hiram king of Tyre sent his servants to Solomon, when he heard that they had anointed him king in place of his father, for Hiram had always been a friend of David. 2 Then Solomon sent word to Hiram, saying, 3 "You know that David my father was unable to build a house for the name of the LORD his God because of the wars which surrounded him, until the LORD put them under the soles of his feet. 4 "But now the LORD my God has given me rest on every side ; there is neither adversary nor misfortune. 5 "Behold, I intend to build a house for the name of the LORD my God, as the LORD spoke to David my father, saying, 'Your son, whom I will set on your throne in your place, he will build the house for My name.' 6 "Now therefore, command that they cut for me cedars from Lebanon, and my servants will be with your servants ; and I will give you wages for your servants according to all that you say, for you know that there is no one among us who knows how to cut timber like the Sidonians." 7 When Hiram heard the words of Solomon, he rejoiced greatly and said, "Blessed be the LORD today, who has given to David a wise son over this great people." 8 So Hiram sent word to Solomon, saying, "I have heard the message which you have sent me; I will do what you desire concerning the cedar and cypress timber. 9 "My servants will bring them down from Lebanon to the sea ; and I will make them into rafts to go by sea to the place where you direct me, and I will have them broken up there, and you shall carry them away. Then you shall accomplish my desire by giving food to my household." 10 So Hiram gave Solomon as much as he desired of the cedar and cypress timber. 11 Solomon then gave Hiram 20,000 kors of wheat as food for his household, and twenty kors of beaten oil ; thus Solomon would give Hiram year by year. 12 The LORD gave wisdom to Solomon, just as He promised him; and there was peace between Hiram and Solomon, and the two of them made a covenant.
Conscription of Laborers
13 Now King Solomon levied forced laborers from all Israel ; and the forced laborers numbered 30,000 men. 14 He sent them to Lebanon, 10,000 a month in relays ; they were in Lebanon a month and two months at home. And Adoniram was over the forced laborers. 15 Now Solomon had 70,000 transporters , and 80,000 hewers of stone in the mountains, 16 besides Solomon's 3,300 chief deputies who were over the project and who ruled over the people who were doing the work. 17 Then the king commanded, and they quarried great stones, costly stones, to lay the foundation of the house with cut stones. 18 So Solomon's builders and Hiram's builders and the Gebalites cut them, and prepared the timbers and the stones to build the house. 3 With their wickedness they make the king glad, And the princes with their lies. 4 They are all adulterers, Like an oven heated by the baker Who ceases to stir up the fire From the kneading of the dough until it is leavened. 5 On the day of our king, the princes became sick with the heat of wine ; He stretched out his hand with scoffers, 6 For their hearts are like an oven As they approach their plotting ; Their anger smolders all night, In the morning it burns like a flaming fire. 7 All of them are hot like an oven, And they consume their rulers ; All their kings have fallen. None of them calls on Me. 8 Ephraim mixes himself with the nations ; Ephraim has become a cake not turned. 9 Strangers devour his strength, Yet he does not know it; Gray hairs also are sprinkled on him, Yet he does not know it. 10 Though the pride of Israel testifies against him, Yet they have not returned to the LORD their God, Nor have they sought Him, for all this. 11 So Ephraim has become like a silly dove, without sense ; They call to Egypt, they go to Assyria. 12 When they go, I will spread My net over them; I will bring them down like the birds of the sky. I will chastise them in accordance with the proclamation to their assembly. 13 Woe to them, for they have strayed from Me! Destruction is theirs, for they have rebelled against Me! I would redeem them, but they speak lies against Me. 14 And they do not cry to Me from their heart When they wail on their beds ; For the sake of grain and new wine they assemble themselves, They turn away from Me. 15 Although I trained and strengthened their arms, Yet they devise evil against Me. 16 They turn, but not upward, They are like a deceitful bow ; Their princes will fall by the sword Because of the insolence of their tongue. This will be their derision in the land of Egypt.

Daily Bible Reading from BibleStudyTools.com
July 3, 2012 - King James Version
28 And one of the scribes came , and having heard them reasoning together , and perceiving that he had answered them well, asked him, Which is the first commandment of all?  29 And Jesus answered him, The first of all the commandments is, Hear , O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord:  30 And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment.  31 And the second is like, namely this , Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these.  32 And the scribe said unto him, Well, Master, thou hast said the truth: for there is one God; and there is none other but he:  33 And to love him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the soul, and with all the strength, and to love his neighbour as himself, is more than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.  34 And when Jesus saw that he answered discreetly, he said unto him, Thou art not far from the kingdom of God. And no man after that durst ask him any question. 35 And Jesus answered and said , while he taught in the temple, How say the scribes that Christ is the Son of David?  36 For David himself said by the Holy Ghost, The LORD said to my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool . 37 David therefore himself calleth him Lord; and whence is he then his son? And the common people heard him gladly.  38 And he said unto them in his doctrine, Beware of the scribes, which love to go in long clothing, and love salutations in the marketplaces,  39 And the chief seats in the synagogues, and the uppermost rooms at feasts:  40 Which devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayers : these shall receive greater damnation.  41 And Jesus sat over against the treasury, and beheld how the people cast money into the treasury: and many that were rich cast in much.  42 And there came a certain poor widow, and she threw in two mites, which make a farthing.  43 And he called unto him his disciples, and saith unto them, Verily I say unto you, That this poor widow hath cast more in , than all they which have cast into the treasury:  44 For all they did cast in of their abundance ; but she of her want did cast in all that she had , even all her living.  1 So king Solomon was king over all Israel.  2 And these were the princes which he had; Azariah the son of Zadok the priest,  3 Elihoreph and Ahiah, the sons of Shisha, scribes ; Jehoshaphat the son of Ahilud, the recorder . 4 And Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was over the host: and Zadok and Abiathar were the priests:  5 And Azariah the son of Nathan was over the officers : and Zabud the son of Nathan was principal officer, and the king's friend:  6 And Ahishar was over the household: and Adoniram the son of Abda was over the tribute.  7 And Solomon had twelve officers over all Israel, which provided victuals for the king and his household: each man his month in a year made provision . 8 And these are their names: The son of Hur, in mount Ephraim:  9 The son of Dekar , in Makaz, and in Shaalbim, and Bethshemesh, and Elonbethhanan:  10 The son of Hesed , in Aruboth; to him pertained Sochoh, and all the land of Hepher:  11 The son of Abinadab, in all the region of Dor; which had Taphath the daughter of Solomon to wife:  12 Baana the son of Ahilud; to him pertained Taanach and Megiddo, and all Bethshean, which is by Zartanah beneath Jezreel, from Bethshean to Abelmeholah, even unto the place that is beyond Jokneam:  13 The son of Geber, in Ramothgilead ; to him pertained the towns of Jair the son of Manasseh, which are in Gilead; to him also pertained the region of Argob, which is in Bashan, threescore great cities with walls and brasen bars:  14 Ahinadab the son of Iddo had Mahanaim:  15 Ahimaaz was in Naphtali; he also took Basmath the daughter of Solomon to wife:  16 Baanah the son of Hushai was in Asher and in Aloth:  17 Jehoshaphat the son of Paruah, in Issachar:  18 Shimei the son of Elah, in Benjamin:  19 Geber the son of Uri was in the country of Gilead, in the country of Sihon king of the Amorites, and of Og king of Bashan; and he was the only officer which was in the land.  20 Judah and Israel were many, as the sand which is by the sea in multitude, eating and drinking , and making merry.  21 And Solomon reigned over all kingdoms from the river unto the land of the Philistines, and unto the border of Egypt: they brought presents, and served Solomon all the days of his life.  22 And Solomon's provision for one day was thirty measures of fine flour, and threescore measures of meal,  23 Ten fat oxen, and twenty oxen out of the pastures, and an hundred sheep, beside harts, and roebucks, and fallowdeer, and fatted fowl.  24 For he had dominion over all the region on this side the river, from Tiphsah even to Azzah, over all the kings on this side the river: and he had peace on all sides round about him. 25 And Judah and Israel dwelt safely, every man under his vine and under his fig tree, from Dan even to Beersheba, all the days of Solomon.  26 And Solomon had forty thousand stalls of horses for his chariots, and twelve thousand horsemen.  27 And those officers provided victual for king Solomon, and for all that came unto king Solomon's table, every man in his month: they lacked nothing.  28 Barley also and straw for the horses and dromedaries brought they unto the place where the officers were, every man according to his charge.  29 And God gave Solomon wisdom and understanding exceeding much , and largeness of heart, even as the sand that is on the sea shore.  30 And Solomon's wisdom excelled the wisdom of all the children of the east country, and all the wisdom of Egypt.  31 For he was wiser than all men; than Ethan the Ezrahite, and Heman, and Chalcol, and Darda, the sons of Mahol: and his fame was in all nations round about.  32 And he spake three thousand proverbs: and his songs were a thousand and five.  33 And he spake of trees, from the cedar tree that is in Lebanon even unto the hyssop that springeth out of the wall: he spake also of beasts, and of fowl, and of creeping things, and of fishes.  34 And there came of all people to hear the wisdom of Solomon, from all kings of the earth, which had heard of his wisdom.  1 And Hiram king of Tyre sent his servants unto Solomon; for he had heard that they had anointed him king in the room of his father: for Hiram was ever a lover of David.  2 And Solomon sent to Hiram, saying , 3 Thou knowest how that David my father could not build an house unto the name of the LORD his God for the wars which were about him on every side , until the LORD put them under the soles of his feet.  4 But now the LORD my God hath given me rest on every side, so that there is neither adversary nor evil occurrent.  5 And, behold, I purpose to build an house unto the name of the LORD my God, as the LORD spake unto David my father, saying , Thy son, whom I will set upon thy throne in thy room, he shall build an house unto my name.  6 Now therefore command thou that they hew me cedar trees out of Lebanon; and my servants shall be with thy servants: and unto thee will I give hire for thy servants according to all that thou shalt appoint : for thou knowest that there is not among us any that can skill to hew timber like unto the Sidonians.  7 And it came to pass, when Hiram heard the words of Solomon, that he rejoiced greatly, and said , Blessed be the LORD this day, which hath given unto David a wise son over this great people.  8 And Hiram sent to Solomon, saying , I have considered the things which thou sentest to me for: and I will do all thy desire concerning timber of cedar, and concerning timber of fir.  9 My servants shall bring them down from Lebanon unto the sea: and I will convey them by sea in floats unto the place that thou shalt appoint me, and will cause them to be discharged there, and thou shalt receive them: and thou shalt accomplish my desire, in giving food for my household.  10 So Hiram gave Solomon cedar trees and fir trees according to all his desire.  11 And Solomon gave Hiram twenty thousand measures of wheat for food to his household, and twenty measures of pure oil: thus gave Solomon to Hiram year by year.  12 And the LORD gave Solomon wisdom, as he promised him: and there was peace between Hiram and Solomon; and they two made a league together.  13 And king Solomon raised a levy out of all Israel; and the levy was thirty thousand men.  14 And he sent them to Lebanon, ten thousand a month by courses: a month they were in Lebanon, and two months at home: and Adoniram was over the levy.  15 And Solomon had threescore and ten thousand that bare burdens, and fourscore thousand hewers in the mountains;  16 Beside the chief of Solomon's officers which were over the work, three thousand and three hundred, which ruled over the people that wrought in the work.  17 And the king commanded , and they brought great stones, costly stones, and hewed stones, to lay the foundation of the house.  18 And Solomon's builders and Hiram's builders did hew them, and the stonesquarers: so they prepared timber and stones to build the house.  3 They make the king glad with their wickedness, and the princes with their lies.  4 They are all adulterers , as an oven heated by the baker , who ceaseth from raising after he hath kneaded the dough, until it be leavened . 5 In the day of our king the princes have made him sick with bottles of wine; he stretched out his hand with scorners . 6 For they have made ready their heart like an oven, whiles they lie in wait : their baker sleepeth all the night; in the morning it burneth as a flaming fire.  7 They are all hot as an oven, and have devoured their judges ; all their kings are fallen : there is none among them that calleth unto me. 8 Ephraim, he hath mixed himself among the people; Ephraim is a cake not turned . 9 Strangers have devoured his strength, and he knoweth it not: yea, gray hairs are here and there upon him, yet he knoweth not. 10 And the pride of Israel testifieth to his face: and they do not return to the LORD their God, nor seek him for all this. 11 Ephraim also is like a silly dove without heart: they call to Egypt, they go to Assyria.  12 When they shall go , I will spread my net upon them; I will bring them down as the fowls of the heaven; I will chastise them, as their congregation hath heard.  13 Woe unto them! for they have fled from me: destruction unto them! because they have transgressed against me: though I have redeemed them, yet they have spoken lies against me. 14 And they have not cried unto me with their heart, when they howled upon their beds: they assemble themselves for corn and wine, and they rebel against me. 15 Though I have bound and strengthened their arms, yet do they imagine mischief against me. 16 They return , but not to the most High: they are like a deceitful bow: their princes shall fall by the sword for the rage of their tongue: this shall be their derision in the land of Egypt.
