The Heart of Man
14 After He called the crowd to Him again, He began saying to them, "Listen to Me, all of you, and understand : 15 there is nothing outside the man which can defile him if it goes into him; but the things which proceed out of the man are what defile the man. 16 ["If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear."] 17 When he had left the crowd and entered the house, His disciples questioned Him about the parable. 18 And He said to them, "Are you so lacking in understanding also ? Do you not understand that whatever goes into the man from outside cannot defile him, 19 because it does not go into his heart, but into his stomach, and is eliminated ?" (Thus He declared all foods clean.) 20 And He was saying, "That which proceeds out of the man, that is what defiles the man. 21 "For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed the evil thoughts, fornications, thefts, murders, adulteries, 22 deeds of coveting and wickedness, as well as deceit, sensuality, envy , slander, pride and foolishness. 23 "All these evil things proceed from within and defile the man."
The Syrophoenician Woman
24 Jesus got up and went away from there to the region of Tyre . And when He had entered a house, He wanted no one to know of it; yet He could not escape notice. 25 But after hearing of Him, a woman whose little daughter had an unclean spirit immediately came and fell at His feet. 26 Now the woman was a Gentile, of the Syrophoenician race. And she kept asking Him to cast the demon out of her daughter. 27 And He was saying to her, "Let the children be satisfied first, for it is not good to take the children's bread and throw it to the dogs." 28 But she answered and said to Him, "Yes, Lord, but even the dogs under the table feed on the children's crumbs." 29 And He said to her, "Because of this answer go ; the demon has gone out of your daughter." 30 And going back to her home, she found the child lying on the bed, the demon having left. 31 Again He went out from the region of Tyre, and came through Sidon to the Sea of Galilee, within the region of Decapolis. 32 They brought to Him one who was deaf and spoke with difficulty, and they implored Him to lay His hand on him. 33 Jesus took him aside from the crowd, by himself, and put His fingers into his ears, and after spitting, He touched his tongue with the saliva; 34 and looking up to heaven with a deep sigh, He said to him, "Ephphatha !" that is, "Be opened !" 35 And his ears were opened, and the impediment of his tongue was removed, and he began speaking plainly. 36 And He gave them orders not to tell anyone ; but the more He ordered them, the more widely they continued to proclaim it. 37 They were utterly astonished, saying, "He has done all things well ; He makes even the deaf to hear and the mute to speak."
Absalom Slain
1 Then David numbered the people who were with him and set over them commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds. 2 David sent the people out, one third under the command of Joab, one third under the command of Abishai the son of Zeruiah, Joab's brother, and one third under the command of Ittai the Gittite. And the king said to the people, "I myself will surely go out with you also." 3 But the people said, "You should not go out; for if we indeed flee, they will not care about us; even if half of us die, they will not care about us. But you are worth ten thousand of us; therefore now it is better that you be ready to help us from the city." 4 Then the king said to them, "Whatever seems best to you I will do." So the king stood beside the gate, and all the people went out by hundreds and thousands. 5 The king charged Joab and Abishai and Ittai, saying, "Deal gently for my sake with the young man Absalom." And all the people heard when the king charged all the commanders concerning Absalom. 6 Then the people went out into the field against Israel, and the battle took place in the forest of Ephraim. 7 The people of Israel were defeated there before the servants of David, and the slaughter there that day was great, 20,000 men. 8 For the battle there was spread over the whole countryside, and the forest devoured more people that day than the sword devoured. 9 Now Absalom happened to meet the servants of David. For Absalom was riding on his mule, and the mule went under the thick branches of a great oak. And his head caught fast in the oak, so he was left hanging between heaven and earth, while the mule that was under him kept going. 10 When a certain man saw it, he told Joab and said, "Behold, I saw Absalom hanging in an oak." 11 Then Joab said to the man who had told him, "Now behold, you saw him! Why then did you not strike him there to the ground ? And I would have given you ten pieces of silver and a belt." 12 The man said to Joab, "Even if I should receive a thousand pieces of silver in my hand, I would not put out my hand against the king's son ; for in our hearing the king charged you and Abishai and Ittai, saying, 'Protect for me the young man Absalom !' 13 "Otherwise, if I had dealt treacherously against his life (and there is nothing hidden from the king ), then you yourself would have stood aloof ." 14 Then Joab said, "I will not waste time here with you." So he took three spears in his hand and thrust them through the heart of Absalom while he was yet alive in the midst of the oak. 15 And ten young men who carried Joab's armor gathered around and struck Absalom and killed him. 16 Then Joab blew the trumpet, and the people returned from pursuing Israel, for Joab restrained the people. 17 They took Absalom and cast him into a deep pit in the forest and erected over him a very great heap of stones. And all Israel fled, each to his tent. 18 Now Absalom in his lifetime had taken and set up for himself a pillar which is in the King's Valley, for he said, "I have no son to preserve my name." So he named the pillar after his own name, and it is called Absalom's Monument to this day.
David Is Grief-stricken
19 Then Ahimaaz the son of Zadok said, "Please let me run and bring the king news that the LORD has freed him from the hand of his enemies." 20 But Joab said to him, "You are not the man to carry news this day, but you shall carry news another day ; however, you shall carry no news today because the king's son is dead." 21 Then Joab said to the Cushite, "Go, tell the king what you have seen." So the Cushite bowed to Joab and ran. 22 Now Ahimaaz the son of Zadok said once more to Joab, "But whatever happens, please let me also run after the Cushite." And Joab said, "Why would you run, my son, since you will have no reward for going ?" 23 "But whatever happens," he said, "I will run." So he said to him, "Run." Then Ahimaaz ran by way of the plain and passed up the Cushite. 24 Now David was sitting between the two gates ; and the watchman went up to the roof of the gate by the wall, and raised his eyes and looked, and behold, a man running by himself. 25 The watchman called and told the king. And the king said, "If he is by himself there is good news in his mouth." And he came nearer and nearer. 26 Then the watchman saw another man running ; and the watchman called to the gatekeeper and said, "Behold, another man running by himself." And the king said, "This one also is bringing good news." 27 The watchman said, "I think the running of the first one is like the running of Ahimaaz the son of Zadok." And the king said, "This is a good man and comes with good news." 28 Ahimaaz called and said to the king, "All is well." And he prostrated himself before the king with his face to the ground. And he said, "Blessed is the LORD your God, who has delivered up the men who lifted their hands against my lord the king." 29 The king said, "Is it well with the young man Absalom ?" And Ahimaaz answered, "When Joab sent the king's servant, and your servant, I saw a great tumult, but I did not know what it was." 30 Then the king said, "Turn aside and stand here." So he turned aside and stood still. 31 Behold, the Cushite arrived, and the Cushite said, "Let my lord the king receive good news, for the LORD has freed you this day from the hand of all those who rose up against you." 32 Then the king said to the Cushite, "Is it well with the young man Absalom ?" And the Cushite answered, "Let the enemies of my lord the king, and all who rise up against you for evil, be as that young man !" 33 The king was deeply moved and went up to the chamber over the gate and wept. And thus he said as he walked, "O my son Absalom, my son, my son Absalom ! Would I had died instead of you, O Absalom, my son, my son !" 21 "In his place a despicable person will arise, on whom the honor of kingship has not been conferred, but he will come in a time of tranquility and seize the kingdom by intrigue. 22 "The overflowing forces will be flooded away before him and shattered, and also the prince of the covenant. 23 "After an alliance is made with him he will practice deception, and he will go up and gain power with a small force of people. 24 "In a time of tranquility he will enter the richest parts of the realm, and he will accomplish what his fathers never did, nor his ancestors ; he will distribute plunder, booty and possessions among them, and he will devise his schemes against strongholds, but only for a time. 25 "He will stir up his strength and courage against the king of the South with a large army ; so the king of the South will mobilize an extremely large and mighty army for war ; but he will not stand, for schemes will be devised against him. 26 "Those who eat his choice food will destroy him, and his army will overflow, but many will fall down slain. 27 "As for both kings, their hearts will be intent on evil, and they will speak lies to each other at the same table ; but it will not succeed, for the end is still to come at the appointed time. 28 "Then he will return to his land with much plunder ; but his heart will be set against the holy covenant, and he will take action and then return to his own land. 29 "At the appointed time he will return and come into the South, but this last time it will not turn out the way it did before. 30 "For ships of Kittim will come against him; therefore he will be disheartened and will return and become enraged at the holy covenant and take action ; so he will come back and show regard for those who forsake the holy covenant. 31 "Forces from him will arise, desecrate the sanctuary fortress, and do away with the regular sacrifice. And they will set up the abomination of desolation. 32 "By smooth words he will turn to godlessness those who act wickedly toward the covenant, but the people who know their God will display strength and take action. 33 "Those who have insight among the people will give understanding to the many ; yet they will fall by sword and by flame, by captivity and by plunder for many days. 34 "Now when they fall they will be granted a little help, and many will join with them in hypocrisy. 35 "Some of those who have insight will fall, in order to refine, purge and make them pure until the end time ; because it is still to come at the appointed time. 36 "Then the king will do as he pleases, and he will exalt and magnify himself above every god and will speak monstrous things against the God of gods ; and he will prosper until the indignation is finished, for that which is decreed will be done. 37 "He will show no regard for the gods of his fathers or for the desire of women, nor will he show regard for any other god ; for he will magnify himself above them all. 38 "But instead he will honor a god of fortresses, a god whom his fathers did not know ; he will honor him with gold, silver, costly stones and treasures. 39 "He will take action against the strongest of fortresses with the help of a foreign god ; he will give great honor to those who acknowledge him and will cause them to rule over the many, and will parcel out land for a price. 40 "At the end time the king of the South will collide with him, and the king of the North will storm against him with chariots, with horsemen and with many ships ; and he will enter countries, overflow them and pass through. 41 "He will also enter the Beautiful Land, and many countries will fall ; but these will be rescued out of his hand : Edom, Moab and the foremost of the sons of Ammon. 42 "Then he will stretch out his hand against other countries, and the land of Egypt will not escape. 43 "But he will gain control over the hidden treasures of gold and silver and over all the precious things of Egypt ; and Libyans and Ethiopians will follow at his heels. 44 "But rumors from the East and from the North will disturb him, and he will go forth with great wrath to destroy and annihilate many. 45 "He will pitch the tents of his royal pavilion between the seas and the beautiful Holy Mountain ; yet he will come to his end, and no one will help him.

Daily Bible Reading from BibleStudyTools.com
June 24, 2012 - King James Version
14 And when he had called all the people unto him, he said unto them, Hearken unto me every one of you, and understand : 15 There is nothing from without a man, that entering into him can defile him: but the things which come out of him, those are they that defile the man.  16 If any man have ears to hear , let him hear . 17 And when he was entered into the house from the people, his disciples asked him concerning the parable.  18 And he saith unto them, Are ye so without understanding also? Do ye not perceive , that whatsoever thing from without entereth into the man, it cannot defile him;  19 Because it entereth not into his heart, but into the belly, and goeth out into the draught, purging all meats?  20 And he said , That which cometh out of the man, that defileth the man.  21 For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders,  22 Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness:  23 All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.  24 And from thence he arose , and went into the borders of Tyre and Sidon, and entered into an house, and would have no man know it: but he could not be hid . 25 For a certain woman, whose young daughter had an unclean spirit, heard of him, and came and fell at his feet:  26 The woman was a Greek, a Syrophenician by nation; and she besought him that he would cast forth the devil out of her daughter.  27 But Jesus said unto her, Let the children first be filled : for it is not meet to take the children's bread, and to cast it unto the dogs.  28 And she answered and said unto him, Yes, Lord: yet the dogs under the table eat of the children's crumbs.  29 And he said unto her, For this saying go thy way ; the devil is gone out of thy daughter.  30 And when she was come to her house, she found the devil gone out , and her daughter laid upon the bed.  31 And again, departing from the coasts of Tyre and Sidon, he came unto the sea of Galilee, through the midst of the coasts of Decapolis.  32 And they bring unto him one that was deaf, and had an impediment in his speech; and they beseech him to put his hand upon him.  33 And he took him aside from the multitude, and put his fingers into his ears, and he spit , and touched his tongue;  34 And looking up to heaven, he sighed , and saith unto him, Ephphatha, that is, Be opened . 35 And straightway his ears were opened , and the string of his tongue was loosed , and he spake plain.  36 And he charged them that they should tell no man: but the more he charged them, so much the more a great deal they published it; 37 And were beyond measure astonished , saying , He hath done all things well: he maketh both the deaf to hear , and the dumb to speak . 1 And David numbered the people that were with him, and set captains of thousands and captains of hundreds over them. 2 And David sent forth a third part of the people under the hand of Joab, and a third part under the hand of Abishai the son of Zeruiah, Joab's brother, and a third part under the hand of Ittai the Gittite. And the king said unto the people, I will surely go forth with you myself also. 3 But the people answered , Thou shalt not go forth : for if we flee away , they will not care for us; neither if half of us die , will they care for us: but now thou art worth ten thousand of us: therefore now it is better that thou succour us out of the city.  4 And the king said unto them, What seemeth you best I will do . And the king stood by the gate side, and all the people came out by hundreds and by thousands.  5 And the king commanded Joab and Abishai and Ittai, saying , Deal gently for my sake with the young man, even with Absalom. And all the people heard when the king gave all the captains charge concerning Absalom.  6 So the people went out into the field against Israel: and the battle was in the wood of Ephraim;  7 Where the people of Israel were slain before the servants of David, and there was there a great slaughter that day of twenty thousand men. 8 For the battle was there scattered over the face of all the country: and the wood devoured more people that day than the sword devoured . 9 And Absalom met the servants of David. And Absalom rode upon a mule, and the mule went under the thick boughs of a great oak, and his head caught hold of the oak, and he was taken up between the heaven and the earth; and the mule that was under him went away . 10 And a certain man saw it, and told Joab, and said , Behold, I saw Absalom hanged in an oak.  11 And Joab said unto the man that told him, And, behold, thou sawest him, and why didst thou not smite him there to the ground? and I would have given thee ten shekels of silver, and a girdle.  12 And the man said unto Joab, Though I should receive a thousand shekels of silver in mine hand, yet would I not put forth mine hand against the king's son: for in our hearing the king charged thee and Abishai and Ittai, saying , Beware that none touch the young man Absalom.  13 Otherwise I should have wrought falsehood against mine own life: for there is no matter hid from the king, and thou thyself wouldest have set thyself against me. 14 Then said Joab, I may not tarry thus with thee. And he took three darts in his hand, and thrust them through the heart of Absalom, while he was yet alive in the midst of the oak.  15 And ten young men that bare Joab's armour compassed about and smote Absalom, and slew him. 16 And Joab blew the trumpet, and the people returned from pursuing after Israel: for Joab held back the people.  17 And they took Absalom, and cast him into a great pit in the wood, and laid a very great heap of stones upon him: and all Israel fled every one to his tent.  18 Now Absalom in his lifetime had taken and reared up for himself a pillar, which is in the king's dale: for he said , I have no son to keep my name in remembrance : and he called the pillar after his own name: and it is called unto this day, Absalom's place.  19 Then said Ahimaaz the son of Zadok, Let me now run , and bear the king tidings , how that the LORD hath avenged him of his enemies . 20 And Joab said unto him, Thou shalt not bear tidings this day, but thou shalt bear tidings another day: but this day thou shalt bear no tidings , because the king's son is dead . 21 Then said Joab to Cushi, Go tell the king what thou hast seen . And Cushi bowed himself unto Joab, and ran . 22 Then said Ahimaaz the son of Zadok yet again to Joab, But howsoever, let me, I pray thee, also run after Cushi. And Joab said , Wherefore wilt thou run , my son, seeing that thou hast no tidings ready ? 23 But howsoever, said he, let me run . And he said unto him, Run . Then Ahimaaz ran by the way of the plain, and overran Cushi.  24 And David sat between the two gates: and the watchman went up to the roof over the gate unto the wall, and lifted up his eyes, and looked , and behold a man running alone. 25 And the watchman cried , and told the king. And the king said , If he be alone, there is tidings in his mouth. And he came apace , and drew near.  26 And the watchman saw another man running : and the watchman called unto the porter, and said , Behold another man running alone. And the king said , He also bringeth tidings . 27 And the watchman said , Me thinketh the running of the foremost is like the running of Ahimaaz the son of Zadok. And the king said , He is a good man, and cometh with good tidings.  28 And Ahimaaz called , and said unto the king, All is well. And he fell down to the earth upon his face before the king, and said , Blessed be the LORD thy God, which hath delivered up the men that lifted up their hand against my lord the king.  29 And the king said , Is the young man Absalom safe? And Ahimaaz answered , When Joab sent the king's servant, and me thy servant, I saw a great tumult, but I knew not what it was. 30 And the king said unto him, Turn aside , and stand here. And he turned aside , and stood still . 31 And, behold, Cushi came ; and Cushi said , Tidings , my lord the king: for the LORD hath avenged thee this day of all them that rose up against thee. 32 And the king said unto Cushi, Is the young man Absalom safe? And Cushi answered , The enemies of my lord the king, and all that rise against thee to do thee hurt, be as that young man is. 33 And the king was much moved , and went up to the chamber over the gate, and wept : and as he went , thus he said , O my son Absalom, my son, my son Absalom! would God I had died for thee , O Absalom, my son, my son!  21 And in his estate shall stand up a vile person , to whom they shall not give the honour of the kingdom: but he shall come in peaceably, and obtain the kingdom by flatteries.  22 And with the arms of a flood shall they be overflown from before him, and shall be broken ; yea, also the prince of the covenant.  23 And after the league made with him he shall work deceitfully: for he shall come up , and shall become strong with a small people.  24 He shall enter peaceably even upon the fattest places of the province; and he shall do that which his fathers have not done , nor his fathers' fathers; he shall scatter among them the prey, and spoil, and riches: yea, and he shall forecast his devices against the strong holds, even for a time.  25 And he shall stir up his power and his courage against the king of the south with a great army; and the king of the south shall be stirred up to battle with a very great and mighty army; but he shall not stand : for they shall forecast devices against him. 26 Yea, they that feed of the portion of his meat shall destroy him, and his army shall overflow : and many shall fall down slain.  27 And both these kings' hearts shall be to do mischief , and they shall speak lies at one table; but it shall not prosper : for yet the end shall be at the time appointed.  28 Then shall he return into his land with great riches; and his heart shall be against the holy covenant; and he shall do exploits, and return to his own land.  29 At the time appointed he shall return , and come toward the south; but it shall not be as the former, or as the latter.  30 For the ships of Chittim shall come against him: therefore he shall be grieved , and return , and have indignation against the holy covenant: so shall he do ; he shall even return , and have intelligence with them that forsake the holy covenant.  31 And arms shall stand on his part, and they shall pollute the sanctuary of strength, and shall take away the daily sacrifice, and they shall place the abomination that maketh desolate . 32 And such as do wickedly against the covenant shall he corrupt by flatteries: but the people that do know their God shall be strong , and do exploits. 33 And they that understand among the people shall instruct many: yet they shall fall by the sword, and by flame, by captivity, and by spoil, many days.  34 Now when they shall fall , they shall be holpen with a little help: but many shall cleave to them with flatteries.  35 And some of them of understanding shall fall , to try them, and to purge , and to make them white , even to the time of the end: because it is yet for a time appointed.  36 And the king shall do according to his will; and he shall exalt himself, and magnify himself above every god, and shall speak marvellous things against the God of gods, and shall prosper till the indignation be accomplished : for that that is determined shall be done . 37 Neither shall he regard the God of his fathers, nor the desire of women, nor regard any god: for he shall magnify himself above all. 38 But in his estate shall he honour the God of forces: and a god whom his fathers knew not shall he honour with gold, and silver, and with precious stones, and pleasant things.  39 Thus shall he do in the most strong holds with a strange god, whom he shall acknowledge and increase with glory: and he shall cause them to rule over many, and shall divide the land for gain.  40 And at the time of the end shall the king of the south push at him: and the king of the north shall come against him like a whirlwind , with chariots, and with horsemen, and with many ships; and he shall enter into the countries, and shall overflow and pass over . 41 He shall enter also into the glorious land, and many countries shall be overthrown : but these shall escape out of his hand, even Edom, and Moab, and the chief of the children of Ammon.  42 He shall stretch forth his hand also upon the countries: and the land of Egypt shall not escape.  43 But he shall have power over the treasures of gold and of silver, and over all the precious things of Egypt: and the Libyans and the Ethiopians shall be at his steps.  44 But tidings out of the east and out of the north shall trouble him: therefore he shall go forth with great fury to destroy , and utterly to make away many.  45 And he shall plant the tabernacles of his palace between the seas in the glorious holy mountain; yet he shall come to his end, and none shall help him.

Learning to pray, and prayer request

by Dale Cresap

My disciples asked me to teach them to pray, and I did. My answer is recorded in my word for eternity, but do not assume that this is the only answer for all people in all situations for all time. You are in a relationship with me. It is just as appropriate for you to ask me how to pray, or in like manner, how to worship. I am as eager and willing to teach you these things now as I was for my original disciples. Your life in me is one of following and seeking and finding. Do you expect your relationship with me to be dynamic and active, fresh and new every morning? If you ask for this you will receive it, and I will teach you how to pray and worship every day.

I believe I mentioned that my wife had knee replacement surgery about 10 days ago. The surgery went well but she has developed some complications from it, with the incision still bleeding but the main thing is cellulitis. This is a serious skin infection and I would appreciate your prayers for her healing.
