Miracles and Healing
21 When Jesus had crossed over again in the boat to the other side, a large crowd gathered around Him; and so He stayed by the seashore. 22 One of the synagogue officials named Jairus came up, and on seeing Him, fell at His feet 23 and implored Him earnestly, saying, "My little daughter is at the point of death ; please come and lay Your hands on her, so that she will get well and live." 24 And He went off with him; and a large crowd was following Him and pressing in on Him. 25 A woman who had had a hemorrhage for twelve years, 26 and had endured much at the hands of many physicians, and had spent all that she had and was not helped at all, but rather had grown worse - 27 after hearing about Jesus, she came up in the crowd behind Him and touched His cloak. 28 For she thought, "If I just touch His garments, I will get well." 29 Immediately the flow of her blood was dried up; and she felt in her body that she was healed of her affliction. 30 Immediately Jesus, perceiving in Himself that the power proceeding from Him had gone forth, turned around in the crowd and said, "Who touched My garments ?" 31 And His disciples said to Him, "You see the crowd pressing in on You, and You say, 'Who touched Me?' " 32 And He looked around to see the woman who had done this. 33 But the woman fearing and trembling, aware of what had happened to her, came and fell down before Him and told Him the whole truth. 34 And He said to her, "Daughter, your faith has made you well ; go in peace and be healed of your affliction." 35 While He was still speaking, they came from the house of the synagogue official, saying, "Your daughter has died ; why trouble the Teacher anymore ?" 36 But Jesus, overhearing what was being spoken, said to the synagogue official, "Do not be afraid any longer, only believe." 37 And He allowed no one to accompany Him, except Peter and James and John the brother of James. 38 They came to the house of the synagogue official ; and He saw a commotion, and people loudly weeping and wailing. 39 And entering in, He said to them, "Why make a commotion and weep ? The child has not died, but is asleep." 40 They began laughing at Him. But putting them all out, He took along the child's father and mother and His own companions , and entered the room where the child was. 41 Taking the child by the hand, He said to her, "Talitha kum !" (which translated means, "Little girl, I say to you, get up!"). 42 Immediately the girl got up and began to walk, for she was twelve years old. And immediately they were completely astounded. 43 And He gave them strict orders that no one should know about this, and He said that something should be given her to eat.
The Woman of Tekoa
1 Now Joab the son of Zeruiah perceived that the king's heart was inclined toward Absalom. 2 So Joab sent to Tekoa and brought a wise woman from there and said to her, "Please pretend to be a mourner, and put on mourning garments now, and do not anoint yourself with oil, but be like a woman who has been mourning for the dead many days ; 3 then go to the king and speak to him in this manner." So Joab put the words in her mouth. 4 Now when the woman of Tekoa spoke to the king, she fell on her face to the ground and prostrated herself and said, "Help, O king." 5 The king said to her, "What is your trouble?" And she answered, "Truly I am a widow, for my husband is dead. 6 "Your maidservant had two sons, but the two of them struggled together in the field, and there was no one to separate them, so one struck the other and killed him. 7 "Now behold, the whole family has risen against your maidservant, and they say, 'Hand over the one who struck his brother, that we may put him to death for the life of his brother whom he killed, and destroy the heir also.' Thus they will extinguish my coal which is left, so as to leave my husband neither name nor remnant on the face of the earth." 8 Then the king said to the woman, "Go to your house, and I will give orders concerning you." 9 The woman of Tekoa said to the king, "O my lord, the king, the iniquity is on me and my father's house, but the king and his throne are guiltless." 10 So the king said, "Whoever speaks to you, bring him to me, and he will not touch you anymore ." 11 Then she said, "Please let the king remember the LORD your God, so that the avenger of blood will not continue to destroy, otherwise they will destroy my son." And he said, "As the LORD lives, not one hair of your son shall fall to the ground." 12 Then the woman said, "Please let your maidservant speak a word to my lord the king." And he said, "Speak." 13 The woman said, "Why then have you planned such a thing against the people of God ? For in speaking this word the king is as one who is guilty, in that the king does not bring back his banished one. 14 "For we will surely die and are like water spilled on the ground which cannot be gathered up again. Yet God does not take away life, but plans ways so that the banished one will not be cast out from him. 15 "Now the reason I have come to speak this word to my lord the king is that the people have made me afraid ; so your maidservant said, 'Let me now speak to the king, perhaps the king will perform the request of his maidservant. 16 'For the king will hear and deliver his maidservant from the hand of the man who would destroy both me and my son from the inheritance of God.' 17 "Then your maidservant said, 'Please let the word of my lord the king be comforting, for as the angel of God, so is my lord the king to discern good and evil. And may the LORD your God be with you.' " 18 Then the king answered and said to the woman, "Please do not hide anything from me that I am about to ask you." And the woman said, "Let my lord the king please speak." 19 So the king said, "Is the hand of Joab with you in all this ?" And the woman replied, "As your soul lives, my lord the king, no one can turn to the right or to the left from anything that my lord the king has spoken. Indeed, it was your servant Joab who commanded me, and it was he who put all these words in the mouth of your maidservant ; 20 in order to change the appearance of things your servant Joab has done this thing. But my lord is wise, like the wisdom of the angel of God, to know all that is in the earth."
Absalom Is Recalled
21 Then the king said to Joab, "Behold now, I will surely do this thing ; go therefore, bring back the young man Absalom." 22 Joab fell on his face to the ground, prostrated himself and blessed the king ; then Joab said, "Today your servant knows that I have found favor in your sight, O my lord, the king, in that the king has performed the request of his servant." 23 So Joab arose and went to Geshur and brought Absalom to Jerusalem. 24 However the king said, "Let him turn to his own house, and let him not see my face." So Absalom turned to his own house and did not see the king's face. 25 Now in all Israel was no one as handsome as Absalom, so highly praised ; from the sole of his foot to the crown of his head there was no defect in him. 26 When he cut the hair of his head (and it was at the end of every year that he cut it, for it was heavy on him so he cut it), he weighed the hair of his head at 200 shekels by the king's weight. 27 To Absalom there were born three sons, and one daughter whose name was Tamar ; she was a woman of beautiful appearance. 28 Now Absalom lived two full years in Jerusalem, and did not see the king's face. 29 Then Absalom sent for Joab, to send him to the king, but he would not come to him. So he sent again a second time, but he would not come. 30 Therefore he said to his servants, "See, Joab's field is next to mine, and he has barley there ; go and set it on fire." So Absalom's servants set the field on fire. 31 Then Joab arose, came to Absalom at his house and said to him, "Why have your servants set my field on fire ?" 32 Absalom answered Joab, "Behold, I sent for you, saying, 'Come here, that I may send you to the king, to say, "Why have I come from Geshur ? It would be better for me still to be there."' Now therefore, let me see the king's face, and if there is iniquity in me, let him put me to death." 33 So when Joab came to the king and told him, he called for Absalom. Thus he came to the king and prostrated himself on his face to the ground before the king, and the king kissed Absalom.
Vision of the Ram and Goat
1 In the third year of the reign of Belshazzar the king a vision appeared to me, Daniel, subsequent to the one which appeared to me previously. 2 I looked in the vision, and while I was looking I was in the citadel of Susa, which is in the province of Elam ; and I looked in the vision and I myself was beside the Ulai Canal. 3 Then I lifted my eyes and looked, and behold, a ram which had two horns was standing in front of the canal. Now the two horns were long, but one was longer than the other, with the longer one coming up last. 4 I saw the ram butting westward, northward, and southward, and no other beasts could stand before him nor was there anyone to rescue from his power, but he did as he pleased and magnified himself. 5 While I was observing, behold, a male goat was coming from the west over the surface of the whole earth without touching the ground ; and the goat had a conspicuous horn between his eyes. 6 He came up to the ram that had the two horns, which I had seen standing in front of the canal, and rushed at him in his mighty wrath. 7 I saw him come beside the ram, and he was enraged at him; and he struck the ram and shattered his two horns, and the ram had no strength to withstand him. So he hurled him to the ground and trampled on him, and there was none to rescue the ram from his power. 8 Then the male goat magnified himself exceedingly . But as soon as he was mighty, the large horn was broken ; and in its place there came up four conspicuous horns toward the four winds of heaven.
The Little Horn
9 Out of one of them came forth a rather small horn which grew exceedingly great toward the south, toward the east, and toward the Beautiful Land. 10 It grew up to the host of heaven and caused some of the host and some of the stars to fall to the earth, and it trampled them down. 11 It even magnified itself to be equal with the Commander of the host ; and it removed the regular sacrifice from Him, and the place of His sanctuary was thrown down. 12 And on account of transgression the host will be given over to the horn along with the regular sacrifice ; and it will fling truth to the ground and perform its will and prosper. 13 Then I heard a holy one speaking, and another holy one said to that particular one who was speaking, "How long will the vision about the regular sacrifice apply, while the transgression causes horror, so as to allow both the holy place and the host to be trampled ?" 14 He said to me, "For 2,300 evenings and mornings; then the holy place will be properly restored."
Interpretation of the Vision
15 When I, Daniel, had seen the vision, I sought to understand it; and behold, standing before me was one who looked like a man. 16 And I heard the voice of a man between the banks of Ulai, and he called out and said, "Gabriel, give this man an understanding of the vision." 17 So he came near to where I was standing, and when he came I was frightened and fell on my face ; but he said to me, "Son of man, understand that the vision pertains to the time of the end." 18 Now while he was talking with me, I sank into a deep sleep with my face to the ground ; but he touched me and made me stand upright . 19 He said, "Behold, I am going to let you know what will occur at the final period of the indignation, for it pertains to the appointed time of the end.
The Ram's Identity
20 "The ram which you saw with the two horns represents the kings of Media and Persia.
The Goat
21 "The shaggy goat represents the kingdom of Greece, and the large horn that is between his eyes is the first king. 22 "The broken horn and the four horns that arose in its place represent four kingdoms which will arise from his nation, although not with his power. 23 "In the latter period of their rule, When the transgressors have run their course, A king will arise, Insolent and skilled in intrigue. 24 "His power will be mighty, but not by his own power, And he will destroy to an extraordinary degree And prosper and perform his will; He will destroy mighty men and the holy people. 25 "And through his shrewdness He will cause deceit to succeed by his influence ; And he will magnify himself in his heart, And he will destroy many while they are at ease. He will even oppose the Prince of princes, But he will be broken without human agency. 26 "The vision of the evenings and mornings Which has been told is true ; But keep the vision secret, For it pertains to many days in the future." 27 Then I, Daniel, was exhausted and sick for days. Then I got up again and carried on the king's business ; but I was astounded at the vision, and there was none to explain it.

Daily Bible Reading from BibleStudyTools.com
June 20, 2012 - King James Version
21 And when Jesus was passed over again by ship unto the other side, much people gathered unto him: and he was nigh unto the sea.  22 And, behold , there cometh one of the rulers of the synagogue, Jairus by name; and when he saw him, he fell at his feet,  23 And besought him greatly, saying , My little daughter lieth at the point of death : I pray thee, come and lay thy hands on her, that she may be healed ; and she shall live . 24 And Jesus went with him; and much people followed him, and thronged him.  25 And a certain woman, which had an issue of blood twelve years,  26 And had suffered many things of many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was nothing bettered , but rather grew worse , 27 When she had heard of Jesus, came in the press behind, and touched his garment.  28 For she said , If I may touch but his clothes, I shall be whole . 29 And straightway the fountain of her blood was dried up ; and she felt in her body that she was healed of that plague.  30 And Jesus, immediately knowing in himself that virtue had gone out of him, turned him about in the press, and said , Who touched my clothes?  31 And his disciples said unto him, Thou seest the multitude thronging thee, and sayest thou , Who touched me?  32 And he looked round about to see her that had done this thing.  33 But the woman fearing and trembling , knowing what was done in her, came and fell down before him, and told him all the truth.  34 And he said unto her, Daughter, thy faith hath made thee whole ; go in peace, and be whole of thy plague.  35 While he yet spake , there came from the ruler of the synagogue's house certain which said , Thy daughter is dead : why troublest thou the Master any further?  36 As soon as Jesus heard the word that was spoken , he saith unto the ruler of the synagogue, Be not afraid , only believe . 37 And he suffered no man to follow him, save Peter, and James, and John the brother of James.  38 And he cometh to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and seeth the tumult, and them that wept and wailed greatly.  39 And when he was come in , he saith unto them, Why make ye this ado , and weep ? the damsel is not dead , but sleepeth . 40 And they laughed him to scorn . But when he had put them all out , he taketh the father and the mother of the damsel, and them that were with him, and entereth in where the damsel was lying . 41 And he took the damsel by the hand, and said unto her, Talitha cumi; which is , being interpreted , Damsel, I say unto thee, arise . 42 And straightway the damsel arose , and walked ; for she was of the age of twelve years. And they were astonished with a great astonishment.  43 And he charged them straitly that no man should know it; and commanded that something should be given her to eat . 1 Now Joab the son of Zeruiah perceived that the king's heart was toward Absalom.  2 And Joab sent to Tekoah, and fetched thence a wise woman, and said unto her, I pray thee, feign thyself to be a mourner , and put on now mourning apparel, and anoint not thyself with oil, but be as a woman that had a long time mourned for the dead : 3 And come to the king, and speak on this manner unto him. So Joab put the words in her mouth.  4 And when the woman of Tekoah spake to the king, she fell on her face to the ground, and did obeisance , and said , Help , O king.  5 And the king said unto her, What aileth thee? And she answered , I am indeed a widow woman, and mine husband is dead . 6 And thy handmaid had two sons, and they two strove together in the field, and there was none to part them, but the one smote the other, and slew him. 7 And, behold, the whole family is risen against thine handmaid, and they said , Deliver him that smote his brother, that we may kill him, for the life of his brother whom he slew ; and we will destroy the heir also: and so they shall quench my coal which is left , and shall not leave to my husband neither name nor remainder upon the earth.  8 And the king said unto the woman, Go to thine house, and I will give charge concerning thee. 9 And the woman of Tekoah said unto the king, My lord, O king, the iniquity be on me, and on my father's house: and the king and his throne be guiltless.  10 And the king said , Whosoever saith ought unto thee, bring him to me, and he shall not touch thee any more . 11 Then said she, I pray thee, let the king remember the LORD thy God, that thou wouldest not suffer the revengers of blood to destroy any more , lest they destroy my son. And he said , As the LORD liveth, there shall not one hair of thy son fall to the earth.  12 Then the woman said , Let thine handmaid, I pray thee, speak one word unto my lord the king. And he said , Say on . 13 And the woman said , Wherefore then hast thou thought such a thing against the people of God? for the king doth speak this thing as one which is faulty, in that the king doth not fetch home again his banished . 14 For we must needs die , and are as water spilt on the ground, which cannot be gathered up again ; neither doth God respect any person: yet doth he devise means, that his banished be not expelled from him. 15 Now therefore that I am come to speak of this thing unto my lord the king, it is because the people have made me afraid : and thy handmaid said , I will now speak unto the king; it may be that the king will perform the request of his handmaid.  16 For the king will hear , to deliver his handmaid out of the hand of the man that would destroy me and my son together out of the inheritance of God.  17 Then thine handmaid said , The word of my lord the king shall now be comfortable: for as an angel of God, so is my lord the king to discern good and bad: therefore the LORD thy God will be with thee. 18 Then the king answered and said unto the woman, Hide not from me, I pray thee, the thing that I shall ask thee. And the woman said , Let my lord the king now speak . 19 And the king said , Is not the hand of Joab with thee in all this? And the woman answered and said , As thy soul liveth, my lord the king, none can turn to the right hand or to the left from ought that my lord the king hath spoken : for thy servant Joab, he bade me, and he put all these words in the mouth of thine handmaid:  20 To fetch about this form of speech hath thy servant Joab done this thing: and my lord is wise, according to the wisdom of an angel of God, to know all things that are in the earth.  21 And the king said unto Joab, Behold now, I have done this thing: go therefore, bring the young man Absalom again . 22 And Joab fell to the ground on his face, and bowed himself, and thanked the king: and Joab said , To day thy servant knoweth that I have found grace in thy sight, my lord, O king, in that the king hath fulfilled the request of his servant.  23 So Joab arose and went to Geshur, and brought Absalom to Jerusalem.  24 And the king said , Let him turn to his own house, and let him not see my face. So Absalom returned to his own house, and saw not the king's face.  25 But in all Israel there was none to be so much praised as Absalom for his beauty: from the sole of his foot even to the crown of his head there was no blemish in him. 26 And when he polled his head, (for it was at every year's end that he polled it: because the hair was heavy on him, therefore he polled it:) he weighed the hair of his head at two hundred shekels after the king's weight.  27 And unto Absalom there were born three sons, and one daughter, whose name was Tamar: she was a woman of a fair countenance.  28 So Absalom dwelt two full years in Jerusalem, and saw not the king's face.  29 Therefore Absalom sent for Joab, to have sent him to the king; but he would not come to him: and when he sent again the second time, he would not come . 30 Therefore he said unto his servants, See , Joab's field is near mine, and he hath barley there; go and set it on fire. And Absalom's servants set the field on fire.  31 Then Joab arose , and came to Absalom unto his house, and said unto him, Wherefore have thy servants set my field on fire?  32 And Absalom answered Joab, Behold, I sent unto thee, saying , Come hither, that I may send thee to the king, to say , Wherefore am I come from Geshur? it had been good for me to have been there still: now therefore let me see the king's face; and if there be any iniquity in me, let him kill me. 33 So Joab came to the king, and told him: and when he had called for Absalom, he came to the king, and bowed himself on his face to the ground before the king: and the king kissed Absalom.  1 In the third year of the reign of king Belshazzar a vision appeared unto me, even unto me Daniel, after that which appeared unto me at the first.  2 And I saw in a vision; and it came to pass, when I saw , that I was at Shushan in the palace, which is in the province of Elam; and I saw in a vision, and I was by the river of Ulai.  3 Then I lifted up mine eyes, and saw , and, behold, there stood before the river a ram which had two horns: and the two horns were high; but one was higher than the other, and the higher came up last.  4 I saw the ram pushing westward, and northward, and southward; so that no beasts might stand before him, neither was there any that could deliver out of his hand; but he did according to his will, and became great . 5 And as I was considering , behold, an he goat came from the west on the face of the whole earth, and touched not the ground: and the goat had a notable horn between his eyes.  6 And he came to the ram that had two horns, which I had seen standing before the river, and ran unto him in the fury of his power.  7 And I saw him come close unto the ram, and he was moved with choler against him, and smote the ram, and brake his two horns: and there was no power in the ram to stand before him, but he cast him down to the ground, and stamped upon him: and there was none that could deliver the ram out of his hand.  8 Therefore the he goat waxed very great : and when he was strong , the great horn was broken ; and for it came up four notable ones toward the four winds of heaven.  9 And out of one of them came forth a little horn, which waxed exceeding great , toward the south, and toward the east, and toward the pleasant land. 10 And it waxed great , even to the host of heaven; and it cast down some of the host and of the stars to the ground, and stamped upon them. 11 Yea, he magnified himself even to the prince of the host, and by him the daily sacrifice was taken away , and the place of his sanctuary was cast down . 12 And an host was given him against the daily sacrifice by reason of transgression, and it cast down the truth to the ground; and it practised , and prospered . 13 Then I heard one saint speaking , and another saint said unto that certain saint which spake , How long shall be the vision concerning the daily sacrifice, and the transgression of desolation , to give both the sanctuary and the host to be trodden under foot?  14 And he said unto me, Unto two thousand and three hundred days ; then shall the sanctuary be cleansed . 15 And it came to pass, when I, even I Daniel, had seen the vision, and sought for the meaning, then, behold, there stood before me as the appearance of a man.  16 And I heard a man's voice between the banks of Ulai, which called , and said , Gabriel, make this man to understand the vision.  17 So he came near where I stood: and when he came , I was afraid , and fell upon my face: but he said unto me, Understand , O son of man: for at the time of the end shall be the vision.  18 Now as he was speaking with me, I was in a deep sleep on my face toward the ground: but he touched me, and set me upright.  19 And he said , Behold, I will make thee know what shall be in the last end of the indignation: for at the time appointed the end shall be. 20 The ram which thou sawest having two horns are the kings of Media and Persia.  21 And the rough goat is the king of Grecia: and the great horn that is between his eyes is the first king.  22 Now that being broken , whereas four stood up for it, four kingdoms shall stand up out of the nation, but not in his power.  23 And in the latter time of their kingdom, when the transgressors are come to the full , a king of fierce countenance, and understanding dark sentences, shall stand up . 24 And his power shall be mighty , but not by his own power: and he shall destroy wonderfully , and shall prosper , and practise , and shall destroy the mighty and the holy people.  25 And through his policy also he shall cause craft to prosper in his hand; and he shall magnify himself in his heart, and by peace shall destroy many: he shall also stand up against the Prince of princes; but he shall be broken without hand.  26 And the vision of the evening and the morning which was told is true: wherefore shut thou up the vision; for it shall be for many days.  27 And I Daniel fainted , and was sick certain days; afterward I rose up , and did the king's business; and I was astonished at the vision, but none understood it.

The Cost

by Dale Cresap

I said that no man can serve two masters, for he would love one and hate the other. I asked my disciple Peter if he loved me more than these. There is a popular teaching today that you can have it all, but this is false. Life is about choices and I will arrange your life to present the same question to you that I did to Peter. The man who found a pearl of great price hidden in a field rejoiced to sell all that he had to buy the field, because he knew it was a good deal he could not otherwise obtain. I want you to rejoice when you choose to follow me, no matter how high the cost.
